چکیده

This paper introduces the krypton sampling and extraction facilities currently developed at the Centre for Science and Peace Research to collect and extract the krypton content from small air samples. The extraction unit able to isolate the krypton in small ambient air samples with high speed and high efficiency using a combination of cryogenic distillation and gas chromatography. Air samples are collected using an automated smart sampler also developed in-house. The high flexibility of sampling and the fast, robust sample preparation are a valuable tool for research and the application of Kr-85 measurements to novel Safeguards procedures.

Analysis of krypton-85 and krypton-81 in a few liters of air.

Long-lived radioactive krypton isotopes, (81)Kr (t1/2 = 229,000 year) and (85)Kr (t1/2 = 10.76 year), are ideal tracers. (81)Kr is cosmogenic and can be used for dating groundwater beyond the (14)C age. (85)Kr is a fission product and can be applied in atmospheric studies, nuclear safety inspections, and dating young groundwater. It has long been a challenge to analyze radio-krypton in small sa...

Analysis of 85Kr: a comparison at the 10-14 level using micro-liter samples

The isotopic abundance of (85)Kr in the atmosphere, currently at the level of 10(-11), has increased by orders of magnitude since the dawn of nuclear age. With a half-life of 10.76 years, (85)Kr is of great interest as tracers for environmental samples such as air, groundwater and ice. Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA) is an emerging method for the analysis of rare krypton isotopes at isotopic ab...

Radiometric 81Kr dating identifies 120,000-year-old ice at Taylor Glacier, Antarctica.

We present successful (81)Kr-Kr radiometric dating of ancient polar ice. Krypton was extracted from the air bubbles in four ∼350-kg polar ice samples from Taylor Glacier in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, and dated using Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA). The (81)Kr radiometric ages agree with independent age estimates obtained from stratigraphic dating techniques with a mean absolute age of...

Efficient Separation of Ar and Kr from Environmental Samples for Trace Radioactive Noble Gas Detection†

Radioactive noble-gas isotopes, Kr (half-life t1/2=10.8 y), Ar (t1/2=269 y), and Kr (t1/2=229,000 y), are ideal tracers and can be detected by atom trap trace analysis (ATTA), a laser-based technique, from environmental samples like air and groundwater. Prior to ATTA measurements, it is necessary to efficiently extract krypton and argon gases from samples. Using a combination of cryogenic disti...

An atom trap trace analysis system for measuring krypton contamination in xenon dark matter detectors.

We have developed an atom trap trace analysis (ATTA) system to measure Kr in Xe at the part per trillion (ppt) level, a prerequisite for the sensitivity achievable with liquid xenon dark matter detectors beyond the current generation. Since Ar and Kr have similar laser cooling wavelengths, the apparatus has been tested with Ar to avoid contamination prior to measuring Xe samples. A radio-freque...
